The smartwatch world is buzzing after MWC 2026, and Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch lineup is at the center of it. But before you hold off on buying a new watch, there’s one critical detail that most early reports are getting wrong.
First, the Correction
Early coverage has claimed the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip is coming to the Galaxy Watch 9. That’s not accurate. Based on current announcements, the new Qualcomm chip is confirmed for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 — the standard Galaxy Watch 9 is expected to continue with Samsung’s Exynos W1000, the same 3nm processor in the Galaxy Watch 8. Samsung pulls this dual-sourcing move regularly, and 2026 appears to be no different.
The Snapdragon Wear Elite, Explained
For the Ultra 2, though, the upgrade is genuinely significant. The Snapdragon Wear Elite brings:
- 5x faster single-core CPU performance vs. Qualcomm’s previous Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2
- 7x higher GPU frame rates, with 1080p at 60fps support
- A dedicated Hexagon NPU for on-device AI processing
- ~30% better battery efficiency
Note: those performance jumps are vs. Qualcomm’s own last-gen chip, not Samsung’s Exynos — real-world comparisons will have to wait for hands-on testing.
What the NPU Actually Means for You
The Hexagon NPU is what makes this more than a spec-sheet story. It enables Samsung’s new “Agentic AI” features that run entirely on-device — no phone, no cloud:
- AI fitness coaching that adjusts in real time based on fatigue and biomechanics
- Predictive health alerts using HRV and skin temperature to flag overtraining or early illness
- Smart email summaries and replies generated directly on your wrist
Offline, faster, and more private than anything cloud-dependent — a real step forward.
Health Sensors: Temper Your Expectations
Samsung will refine its BioActive Sensor suite, but don’t expect a sensor revolution. Non-invasive glucose monitoring and advanced hypertension tracking remain unconfirmed — they’re R&D goals, not guaranteed features.
The Watch 9 builds on the Watch 8’s already solid foundation of ECG, SpO2, body composition, and sleep tracking.
Launch and Price
Both watches are expected at Galaxy Unpacked in July 2026, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. Pricing should hold close to current levels:
- Galaxy Watch 9: ~$349–$429 depending on size and LTE
- Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: A premium over that, given the Qualcomm chip
The Verdict
On a Galaxy Watch 7 or older? The 2026 lineup is worth waiting for. The Watch 9 will be a capable, polished upgrade. But if the Snapdragon Wear Elite’s AI horsepower is what excites you, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is the one to watch — not the standard model.
